Increase puts Ohio gas prices closer to $2 as year ends

The average Southwest Florida price was $2.019 a month ago and stood at $2.336 this time past year.

In Paducah, prices are ranging from $1.75 to $1.99 a gallon.

Christmas Day already featured the lowest gas prices since 2008, and drivers will ring in 2016 with prices well below last year's holiday.

"There has not been a better time in years for motorists to extend their trips and travel farther, as sub-$2 per gallon gas can be found at nearly 70 percent of stations in the country", according to GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan.

Relief at the pump is one less thing drivers like Ryan have to worry about this year. That figure still trails the national average of $2 a gallon and is well behind neighboring Warren County, N.J., at $1.77. The highest reported Modesto price was $2.79 at the Chevron station at Pelandale Avenue and Sisk Road. Among Texas metro areas, El Paso has the highest average price this week at $1.83 per gallon, while Corpus Christi has the lowest at $1.69 per gallon, according to AAA Texas. They say those numbers are up because gas prices are down.

Gas prices have dropped because, there is more than enough oil and gasoline supplies around the world to meet current demand. "By late-February or early March, we'll likely see an upward trend as demand picks up for gasoline and refiners do maintenance ahead of summer, limiting gasoline production". The lower prices have "definitely" helped his bank account during the holidays, he said.

"Gasoline could get even cheaper in the coming weeks as some of the lowest prices of the year typically arrive in January", Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesman, said in a release.

Weekly price comparisons reflect this regional volatility, and state averages have moved by more than a nickel per gallon in both directions.
